HOUSE RESOLUTION 15

Commemorating the passing of Corlis Willard Harris, public
servant and former member of the West Virginia House of
Delegates from the County of Roane.
Whereas, The productive life of Corlis Willard Harris ended
on Wednesday, November 20, 1996, in Roane General Hospital; and
Whereas, Corlis Willard Harris was born on August 6, 1917, in
Roane County to the late Homer A. Harris and Mamie Smith Harris.
He was a graduate of Capitol City Commercial College, Charleston,
and was a Navy Veteran of World War II; and
Whereas, Corlis Willard Harris was a former member of the
West Virginia House of Delegates where he served with ability as
well as devotion from 1977 to 1978; and
Whereas, Corlis Willard Harris was a business leader in the
community of Roane County as well as the State of West Virginia,
having formerly served as President of Harris Oil Company and
Rouzer Oil Company. He was a member of the West Virginia Oil and
Natural Gas Producers Association and was named Oil and Gas Man
of the Year in 1978. He was also a member of the board of
directors and past president of the Traders Bank of Spencer; and
Whereas, In addition to his public service, Corlis Willard
Harris also dedicated much of his time to various causes and was
a member of numerous civic, social and service organizations including being a member and former president of the West
Virginia Black Walnut Festival, member and past president of the
board of trustees of the Roane County Library, past president and
member of the Rotary Club of Spencer and was a Paul Harris
Fellow. He was also a fifty year member and former treasurer of
the Linden Lodge #83 AF&AM and Linden Chapter #152, OES, a member
of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Charleston, Beni Kedem
Temple, Charleston, and the Royal Order of Jesters, Court #156,
Parkersburg; and
Whereas, Mr. Harris is survived by his wife, Justine Spencer
Harris; two sons, Stanton A. Harris and Wayne C. Harris, both of
Spencer, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren;
therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Delegates:
That sincere condolences are hereby expressed to the family
of Corlis Willard Harris upon the sad occasion of the loss of a
loving husband, father and grandfather, and of a leader,
statesman and friend; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates
forward copies of this resolution to the family of Corlis Willard
Harris.
